Vegan Steak Sandwich

, ,

One thing that can be hard to replicate a vegan version of is steak, particularly for a steak sandwich as the texture plays a big part. However this lions mane steak looks the part and certainly has a very convincing texture, it is so realistic in this sandwich combination.

I paired this vegan steak with cheese, spinach, creamy garlic mayo and a herby, vinegary chimichurri sauce for the perfect balance of flavour combinations.

If you’re craving a good steak sandwich this is the closest you’ll get as a vegan alternative- even meat eaters will be mind blown with this one!

Reasons you will love this vegan steak sandwich-

REALISTIC- If you’re looking for the most realistic plant based steak this lions mushroom steak will be the one for you.

SATISFYING- The meaty texture of the mushroom, the creaminess of the garlic mayo, the herby tangy flavour from the chimichurri and the savoury sharpness from the cheese is the perfect combination.

PLANT BASED- Yes I know it looks super meaty and unbelievable but this sandwich is completely vegan!

Vegan sandwich ingredients and substitutes-

  • Lions mane mushroom steak- I used my recipe for lions mane mushroom steak that you can find here. You can also use any other vegan steak you like if you don’t have access to lions mane mushroom.
  • Turkish bread- I used garlic Turkish bread for an extra flavour layer. You can use any bread you like.
  • Garlic mayo- Garlic mayo brings a creamy element to the sandwich. Feel free to use ordinary mayo.
  • Vegan cheese- I used a small grater to grate on the brand ‘made with plants’ vegan cheddar from Woolies in Australia. Any cheese will work fine here.
  • Fresh spinach- Spinach is a great sandwich addition that doesn’t have an overpowering flavour. You can also use lettuce or rocket if you like.
  • Chimichurri- Chimichurri is a classic steak condiment, its vinegary and herby and works well in this sandwich. You can omit this if you prefer, just add more mayo.
