Vegan Caramelized Onion Dip

, , ,

I call this French onion dip but its technically not as I don’t use a French onion soup packet. So lets call it French onion inspired dip or even a caramelized onion dip.

You may know French onion dip as full of dairy but a dairy free version is equally as delicious.

This creamy dip is essential for a barbeque spread, game day snack or just to sit with a bag of chips on you own and enjoy!

The hardest part of homemade French onion dip is waiting for the onions to cook and then to cool down before you can devour the dip.

With just 7 ingredients and 30 minutes you can have the worlds most delicious dip in your hands but completely dairy free!

French onion dip Ingredients

  • Onion - A large yellow or white onion is best.
  • Dairy free butter – This is to get the onions cooking. You could use oil instead.
  • Cream cheese – Your favourite shop bought vegan cream cheese.
  • Onion powder - This is essential to maximise the concentrated onion flavor.
  • Garlic – Ideally granules or powder.
  • Coconut yoghurt – Or any unsweetened dairy free yoghurt.
  • Chives – Fresh chives are best but you can use dried- I would mix the dip with the chives before cooking the onions to give the chives a chance to hydrate slightly.
  • Crispy onions to garnish – or any garnish you think looks good!

Best chips to serve with dip

Usually I love a cracker, some bread, even veggie dippers but I feel this dip is exclusively for the crinkle cut salted chip- its how its served in the US and for good reason!

Dairy free dips

When talking to some non vegans about what I eat the response I get is "but what about the cheese, yoghurt, cream" as many people do not know the wonderful products we have access to in 2026. We really can recreate anything traditionally made with animal products even a creamy, dairy filled dip so no one has to miss out.
