Vegan Souvlaki
Barbeque season has often felt overwhelming as a vegan. I’ve always wanted to use it as an opportunity to show meat eaters how good vegan food can be but not wanting to just bring some vegan burgers and call it a day. So this year I am on a mission to bring you the best vegan bbq recipes.
These souvlaki skewers are made using soya chaap- an Indian vegan meat alternative that has the perfect texture when grilled. This is marinated in a Greek style yoghurt based marinade, skewered and grilled to perfection and will have all of the meat eaters mind blown!
Load the perfect vegan grilled meat into a pitta with salad and garlic sauce for the ultimate Greek souvlaki wrap.
If you are looking for a great meaty skewer for the bbq that is 100% plant based you have to try this recipe!

Hosting a vegan bbq? Here are some more recipes perfect for a summer barbeque!

You'll love this barbeque recipe because its
Easy- All you need to do is chop up the vegan chicken, mix a marinade, skewer and you're ready to go!
Make ahead friendly- You can marinate and skewer these ahead of time. Just keep in the fridge for up to 24 hours beforehand.
Great for meat eaters- Barbeques are often all meat based and convincing a meat eater to just have vegetables & salad at a bbq is a hard task! I think it is essential to wow them with things like these souvlaki skewers to show them how good vegan food can be.

Notes on the ingredients-
- Soya chaap- Soya chaap is an Indian meat substitute made of soy flour. It is generally fairly cheap to buy and is a great high protein meat replacement. It is shelf stable as it is canned so a great ingredient to buy. You can buy it in the world food section of supermarkets, Indian grocery stores or online. If you cant find soya chaap you can use any vegan chicken or tofu if you wish.
- Plain soy yoghurt- Plain, unsweetened yoghurt is important to use as the marinade is going to be savoury. I find soy is best but you can use coconut or oat instead.
- Extra virgin olive oil- Oil in the marinade helps the skewers to cook. I used extra virgin olive oil but you can use any oil.
- Garlic- Fresh garlic is best but garlic powder also works.
- Lemon juice- Fresh lemon juice is best and if you like it super lemony feel free to add some zest too.
- Oregano- Oregano is a must for Greek food so don’t skip this.
- Paprika- Paprika gives great colour and a slight smokiness. Sweet or smoked are both fine.
- Vegan chicken stock powder- Soya chaap doesn’t have much flavour which makes it great for marinating. To give it a chicken flavour I use my favourite brand of accidentally vegan chicken stock powder here in Australia- ‘massels’. Try to find a vegan chicken powder if not you can use vegetable.

Which unflavoured soy yogurt do you buy in Australia? The only one I’ve found is Kingland and it’s pretty bad! 😬-
Hey Kristen,
Sadly the soy yoghurt in Australia is bad so I do make my own! Its actually not as difficult as you’d think and much more cost effective too.
I follow this recipe- https://www.naturally-nina.com/nourishing-recipes-for-a-balanced-lifestyle/2018/1/6/homemade-vegan-yoghurt and i use protein vitasoy and a spoon of shop bought yoghurt. You can buy a cheap yoghurt maker in most op shops too!
Hope you give it a go! 🙂

Here in the UK you can buy dried soya chaaps in Asian shops. They are so much nicer than the ones in brine.
