Vegan Meat Pie
There’s nothing quite as comforting as digging into a classic Australian meat pie- golden, flaky pastry on the outside and a rich, savoury filling on the inside. This vegan version captures all those nostalgic flavours, but with a delicious plant-based twist! Instead of meat we’re using jackfruit to create a meaty texture that’s perfect for a vegan pie or even vegan pot pie.
What makes this version even better? It’s super easy thanks to store-bought pastry sheets no need to fuss with homemade dough when you can have perfectly flaky pastry straight from the freezer.

If you’ve ever wondered how to make a meat pie from scratch, this recipe will walk you through it step-by-step no fancy equipment, just simple, wholesome ingredients. It’s one of those easy meat pie recipes that looks impressive but is secretly low effort.
Whether you’re already vegan or just curious to try a plant-based take on an Aussie classic, this jackfruit-filled pie is the ultimate comfort food for any night of the week.
Tip- If you only have puff pastry you can make this as a vegan pot pie instead. Just add the filling to a baking dish and cover with pastry and bake the same as this recipe.

Why you will love this vegan meat pie
Simple to make- Using shop bought pastry sheets makes this pie recipe a breeze. It’s simply a matter of whipping up a quick filling, cutting the pastry, assembling and baking.
Comfort food heaven- You can’t beat a good pastry. This pie is my go-to when I just need a good wholesome snack that’s filling.
Customizable- You can really add any filling you like to this. Add some leftover veg or swap the jackfruit to vegan minced meat- its totally up to you and the contents of your fridge.
Batch cook friendly- These pies are freezable so make a big batch and keep them in the freezer for on demand snacks in your time of need.

What to serve with a meat pie
Meat pies are great as a filling, satisfying snack but they also work really well as a good hearty meal of pie, mashed potatoes, vegetables and gravy. Or if you want a healthier option- serve with a good side salad.
Notes on the ingredients-
- Shortcrust pastry- Shortcrust pastry is the solid bottom for the pie. I just use shop bought as most shop bought pastry here in Australia is vegan but be sure to double check.
- Puff pastry- Puff pastry is flaky and light and makes the best pie lid to conceal all of the pie filling. Shop bought pastry is fine but feel free to make your own if you like.
- Jackfruit- Jackfruit has a great meaty texture that visually resembles beef in this pie. It is low in protein so not an exact nutrition match but who is eating a pie for nutrition purposes?! Tinned jackfruit is perfect for this be sure to check that it’s not sweetened.
- Dark soy sauce- Dark soy sauce gives the rich flavor and dark color making the filling resemble meat more.

- Mushroom seasoning- Mushroom seasoning gives an umami flavour and is a great alternative to MSG. I buy mine at the Chinese supermarket.
- Gravy powder- I use the British brand ‘bisto’ as it has thickeners and a great flavour. When choosing a gravy powder make sure its vegan.
- Soy milk- Soy milk is a great alternative to egg wash for vegan baking. The proteins in the soy milk help the top of the pie get golden. Be sure to use an unsweetened soy milk for savory cooking.
