Vegan Hong Kong French Toast
Hong Kong French toast is a take on French toast that you can find in cafes in Hong Kong, usually made with milk bread and topped with butter and condensed milk.
I’ve recently been seeing HK French toast circulating on social media and its quickly become something I had to have! However the as the original recipe Hong Kong French toast is coated in egg mixture and topped with dairy butter it’s not vegan so here I’ve made a vegan version.
The bread has layers of peanut butter and is fried to golden crispy perfection on the outside, it’s absolutely delicious and indulgent. I have made a version both with peanut butter and vegan Nutella layers and both were amazing.
This dish is an impressive looking dish that can be served as a dessert or snack that everyone will love.

Reasons you will love this Vegan Hong Kong French toast-
SWEET- Coated in a sweetened batter and topped with syrup this is the ultimate sweet treat.
FLUFFY- The bread slices are soaked in the mixture making them super soft and fluffy. Bonus points if you use fresh thick cut bakery bread!
EASY- This recipe only has a few ingredients that you probably already have in your cupboard, its super easy to make and comes together in less than 10 minutes.
How to make vegan french toast
French toast is usually made with egg and milk so for the vegan version i mixed corn starch, soy milk, sugar and cinnamon together to make the dipping liquid for the bread. This gives the slightly crispy outer layer of the french toast.
Hong Kong French Toast ingredients and substitutes-
- White bread- I used cheap supermarket white bread for this recipe, so I used 4 layers to make it thicker. However, I would recommend buying an uncut white bakery bread and cutting it yourself so you can make the slices as tick as you like.
- Smooth peanut butter- I used peanut butter that is just 100% peanuts, this is the best for spreading onto fresh bread as it doesn’t break holes in the bread when trying to spread. Feel free to use crunchy if that’s your thing! This recipe is also great with chocolate spread or jam.
- Corn flour- Corn starch makes the batter give a crispy finish when fried.
- Sugar- Sugar is used to sweeten the batter. You can use a liquid sweetener or powdered sweetener if you prefer.
- Soy milk- Soy milk is my preferred plant milk for cooking and baking but you can use any plant milk for this.
- Cinnamon- I love the addition of cinnamon in the batter but you can omit if you like.
- Syrup- I used maple syrup but you can use agave or even better- vegan condensed milk to drizzle on top.
